{"id":16546,"date":"2015-10-15T23:03:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T23:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testv45.demowebsitelinks.com\/ColleenKeane\/?p=16546"},"modified":"2023-09-28T23:09:38","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T23:09:38","slug":"abq-debuts-indigenous-peoples-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testv45.demowebsitelinks.com\/ColleenKeane\/2015\/10\/15\/abq-debuts-indigenous-peoples-day\/","title":{"rendered":"ABQ debuts Indigenous People\u2019s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Special to the Times<\/strong><br \/>\nColleen Keane<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALBUQUERQUE<\/strong> \u2013 In one of the largest turnouts the city has ever seen, more than a thousand people took to the streets Monday to celebrate the first Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day and to protest past and present atrocities of colonization.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in solidarity, the celebration engaged tribes across the state and country, members of the Red Nation, Palestinian, African-American, Chicano human rights movements, along with students from organizations like the UNM\u2019s Kiva Club and the National Coalition against Racism in Sports.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning the celebration, respected Dine elder Larry Foster gave a blessing to the people who stood shoulder to shoulder at the corner of 1st and Central Avenues before the march and rally began.<\/p>\n<p>Then, walking slowly to the beat of drums, marchers, who included youth, parents carrying children and elders in wheelchairs, cried out as they circled several downtown blocks near civic plaza, \u201cWhat do we want? Native rights! When do we want it?
