WINDOW ROCK \u2014 Din\u00e9 College President Maggie George has been placed on administrative leave while the college\u2019s board of regents investigates complaints against her, BOR Secretary Tommy Lewis Jr. confirmed Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The action came after \u201ca lengthy discussion on personnel matters\u201d that occurred in executive session, Lewis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. George was placed on suspension for five days and after that our attorney will work with the board chair and human resources department to review various allegations of tension, disharmony and unfair treatment to see whether or not they\u2019re real,\u201d Lewis said, adding that George will be on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.<\/p>\n

Also at the meeting, Lewis said, new regent Greg Bigman was elected president of the board and Theresa Hatathlie was elected vice president, with Lewis as secretary and Nelson BeGaye as treasurer.<\/p>\n

Bigman and Johnson Dennison had previously been appointed by Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye to replace Fannie Atcitty and Loretta Draper, staunch supporters of George who were serving on expired terms.<\/p>\n

Vice President for Academic Affairs Mart\u00edn Ahumada reportedly was appointed to fill in for George during her absence.<\/p>\n

Anderson Hoskie, representing East- ern Agency, cast the lone vote against George\u2019s suspension, according to multi- ple attenders at the meeting.<\/p>\n

George has been under fire by faculty and staff almost since she took over from ousted president Ferlin Clark in 2011. In a petition earlier this year, 34 faculty members and staff accused her of creating a climate of fear, hiring administrators who don\u2019t have advanced degrees and retaliating against anyone who spoke up against her policies.<\/p>\n

The previous board had refused to investigate the allegations and had allowed Atcitty and Draper to serve more than a year past the expiration of their terms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
