\n<\/strong>SPECIAL TO THE TIMES<\/p>\n

ALBUQUERQUE<\/strong> – Native women excel in all aspects of giving and nurturing life. Even in those regards, Dr. Karletta Daan\u00e9 Chief (Bitterwater and Near The Water, Many Goats on her mother\u2019s side; Red Running Into The Water and Giant People Clans on her father\u2019s side) is an extraordinary young woman.<\/p>\n

She is not \u201cjust\u201d a Din\u00e9 hydrologist and assistant professor at the University of Arizona Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Sciences; and, renowned lecturer. She is also a wife and the mother of two young boys.<\/p>\n

Chief earned her Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. She continued her studies at U of A, where she earned her PhD in Hydrology and Water Resources.<\/p>\n

Her educational path was not always clear to her. Rather, she describes it as a series of steps through a tunnel, always pursuing the light at the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a series of connecting tunnels. It wasn\u2019t like I came from the reservation thinking I was going to get a PhD because of A, B, C,\u201d said Chief. \u201cIt was a series of experiences and a lot of stubbing my toe along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The whole idea of her attending college was not exactly expected of her. No one in her immediate family had attended college.<\/p>\n

Chief recalls, \u201cIt was something that my parents hoped for me. And, they let me know that they supported me. My dad was taken away from his family when he went to boarding school at 12 years old. Despite the challenges he faced, he was able to excel.\u201d Chief\u2019s father earned an IBM-funded scholarship to attend college. But he was never able to use it due to family and cultural obligations.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents hoped I would choose to pursue education. They knew the opportunity was there. They didn\u2019t expect me to stay home and continue a lot of the cultural obligations, as a woman, like being arranged in marriage. It was like picking a different path and delaying that next step in terms of how it had been for my parents,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She cites the desire to help her family and community as the main reasons she studied and worked so hard<\/p>\n

\u201cThat motivated me to go to college,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted to get my degree to help them address the environmental conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as an undergrad at Stanford, her peers could see into her future. One close friend and mentor always addressed her as \u201cDr. Chief.\u201d She re- counts, \u201cI was an 18-year-old, trying to get my Bachelor\u2019s, and he would say \u2018Dr. Chief, this is what a dissertation looks like.\u2019 And, he placed his manuscript in front of me. And, he said \u2018One day, you\u2019re going to get a PhD and you\u2019re going to write a manuscript like this.\u2019 I was in awe.\u201d<\/p>\n

She credits him with planting the seed in her mind and believing in what was possible.<\/p>\n

Chief was fortunate to have<\/p>\n
