{"id":16294,"date":"2016-05-12T20:37:26","date_gmt":"2016-05-12T20:37:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testv45.demowebsitelinks.com\/ColleenKeane\/?p=16294"},"modified":"2023-09-18T20:46:27","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T20:46:27","slug":"hausman-books-engage-students-in-reading-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testv45.demowebsitelinks.com\/ColleenKeane\/2016\/05\/12\/hausman-books-engage-students-in-reading-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Hausman  books engage  students in  reading, history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BY COLLEEN KEANE<\/strong><br \/>\nSPECIAL TO THE TIMES<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALBUQUERQUE<\/strong> &#8211; In this age of digital devices, it can be hard to get students to read a book with a real cover on it.<\/p>\n<p>But, that\u2019s not the case for Brad Budinger\u2019s fourth-grade class at the Pine Springs Elementary school near Sanders, Ariz., where his students not only read a book once, but they read it twice. They also flip back and re-read passages about characters they liked the most.<\/p>\n<p>Budinger said that it\u2019s not hard to engage students in reading when you give them books with complex stories packed with lots of action and realistic characters that reflect their Din\u00e9 culture and history.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why he said he chose a series of books by author, Gerald Hausman, for his class to read this year.<\/p>\n<p>Hausman, who has Hungarian Jewish, German, English and Algonquin heritage, said that he made friends with Din\u00e9 students in college during the 1960s.
